Army Will Defend Democracy, COAS Vows

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, has assured that the Nigerian Army will not be manipulated by any group to undermine the nation’s democratic processes.

This pledge was made during the opening ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff Combined Second and Third Quarters Conference 2024, held on Tuesday at the Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs Hall in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja emphasized, “As Chief of Army Staff, my simple response to the call is, ‘Thanks, but no thanks!’ The Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically advance any interests.” His statement underscores a clear stance against any attempts to use the military for political gains.

Lagbaja also addressed the army’s resilience and unity in light of past criticisms related to military interventions in Nigeria. He assured that the army remains focused on its mission to support the federal government and promote the welfare of all Nigerians.

“As the service that has faced significant criticism due to previous military interventions in Nigeria, the Nigerian Army remains secure and united. We are resolute in sustaining our ongoing efforts to ensure maximum revenue accrues to the Federal Government for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Lagbaja stated.
