“No More Special Promotions In Police,” Says PSC Chairman Argungu

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has officially ended the practice of special promotions within the Nigeria Police Force. Chairman of the PSC, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, announced the decision on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, emphasizing that promotions will now strictly be earned through merit-based assessments, including written examinations and interviews.

DIG Argungu stressed that the PSC will no longer act as a rubber stamp for irregular promotions, asserting that “merit based on passing of prescribed examination and other basic requirements will now count on the promotion of Officers and Men of the Nigeria Police Force.”

He clarified that special promotions, which are not standard practice globally, will no longer be encouraged under his leadership.

While acknowledging that the law permits accelerated promotions for officers who demonstrate exceptional skill in their duties, Argungu noted that such instances will be closely monitored to prevent abuse.

He highlighted that seniority will no longer guarantee advancement, as any officer who fails the promotion examination will remain at their current rank. Officers who fail the examination three times will face retirement at their current level for incompetence.

Argungu called on retired police officers to support the new direction, highlighting the value of their experience in shaping a merit-based promotion system. “The Commission will no longer promote Officers who cannot pass prescribed written examinations,” he reiterated.

The Chairman of the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria, AIG Paul Ochonu (rtd), expressed the association’s support for the PSC’s leadership.

He emphasized the importance of a strong partnership between the PSC, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Office of the National Security Adviser to achieve the best outcomes for the force. Ochonu noted, “The trio, working as a team, was capable of getting the best for the Nigeria Police Force.”

DIG Argungu, accompanied by fellow PSC Commissioner DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), assured the delegation that his commitment to the Nigeria Police Force and the PSC would remain unwavering, stating, “I will not fail that institution and I will also not fail the PSC, I will do my best not to put the two institutions to shame.” He affirmed his dedication to maintaining the integrity of the force, adding, “If I die and have to come back, I will still want to be a Policeman.”
