William Troost-Ekong Returns to Super Eagles as Team Prepares for AFCON 2025 Qualifiers

William Troost-Ekong has made a much-anticipated comeback to the Super Eagles, bringing renewed hope and leadership to the Nigerian national team.

The 31-year-old defender is rejoining the squad as Nigeria gears up for the upcoming qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. This return is especially notable given Troost-Ekong’s previous exclusion under former manager Finidi George.

Troost-Ekong’s absence during critical World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic had caused considerable speculation among fans and observers.

Despite the public declaration of his readiness to play—where he stated he was “fit and ready whenever Finidi needed him ahead of the WCQ”—he was left out of the squad. This decision sparked debate about whether fitness issues were the reason for his omission.

During his time away from the national team, Nigeria experienced a series of disappointing results, which eventually contributed to Finidi George stepping down from his role as head coach. With the change in leadership, Troost-Ekong’s return is seen as a positive shift for the team.

Now back in familiar territory, Troost-Ekong is training with the Super Eagles in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, his hometown. He expressed his enthusiasm about this reunion through social media, posting on Facebook: “BACK ON HOME SOIL. LOCKED IN.” This message, paired with photos from his training, underscores his excitement and commitment to the team.
