The Labour Party, led by National Chairman Julius Abure, has announced that there will be no automatic tickets for any candidate in the 2027 presidential election, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi and the current Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti.
This announcement came during a press briefing by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Monday.
The NEC emphasized that the nominations for the 2027 elections, along with all other positions the party will contest, will be open to all interested candidates, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
During the press briefing, Julius Abure addressed recent developments within the party, including a stakeholders’ meeting convened by Governor Otti last week, where a caretaker committee was appointed.
Abure made it clear that no governor has the power to remove the party’s leadership unilaterally.
He stated, “No governor that we gave ticket can harass us out of office; no governor, no matter how highly placed, will come and with a fiat, dissolve the NWC, dissolve state councils, or dissolve LG councils; even a military government would not do that.”
Abure reiterated that the leadership of the Labour Party, elected during the party’s convention on March 27, 2024, will continue to defend its mandate against any external interference.
Last week, the Labour Party held a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, where Senator Esther Nenadi Usman was appointed as the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee.
Usman, a former Minister of Finance and former senator for Kaduna South, will lead the 29-member committee alongside Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who will serve as Secretary. The committee has been tasked with completing its work within 90 days.
