Edo 2024: “We Don’t Have Guns, But We Have the Voters,” Governor Otti Says as He Endorses Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has thrown his full support behind Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party candidate for the upcoming Edo 2024 gubernatorial election.

Addressing party members and supporters on Thursday, Governor Otti highlighted the Labour Party’s commitment to a peaceful and fair election, emphasizing the power of the voters over the use of force.

Speaking in Igbo, Governor Otti underscored the Labour Party’s strategy of relying on its voter base rather than resorting to violence.

He stated, “Though the party may not have the guns and ammunition to win the election, we have the voters to deliver our chosen candidate for the people of the state.”

His message was clear: the Labour Party intends to win the governorship race through the strength of its supporters and the integrity of the electoral process.

Governor Otti encouraged the people of Edo State to be vigilant and proactive in protecting their votes. He urged them to ensure that the election remains free from manipulation and that their voices are heard through the ballot box.

Drawing from his own experience during the elections in Abia State, he stressed the importance of citizens remaining at their polling stations after casting their votes to guard against any attempts at electoral malpractice.

“This election will make a difference in Edo State. It is an election for the people,” Otti said, reflecting on his electoral journey in Abia State. “So, the charge I want to give you is that when you vote on that day, remain at your polling booth and do not leave. That is how we did it in Abia State. For 48 to 72 hours, nobody sleeps.”

His call to action was a rallying cry for vigilance and determination, urging voters to stay alert to protect their electoral rights.

Governor Otti further emphasized the need for vigilance with an analogy, stating, “I used to tell our people that we have a saying, ‘The rat does not eat something when the owner is awake.’” He continued, “So, you should not sleep. If it is about the votes, we will have the votes; if it is about winning, we will win. We will not allow any rat to steal our victory.”

His words painted a vivid picture of the resolve needed to safeguard the electoral process from potential threats and to ensure that the true will of the people prevails.

Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s candidate, welcomed Governor Otti’s endorsement, acknowledging the significant impact of the governor’s support. He expressed gratitude not only for the backing of party members but also for the broader encouragement of all voters in Edo State.

Akpata highlighted the importance of Governor Otti’s endorsement, seeing it as a strong message of unity and a boost to the party’s campaign efforts.
