Nigerian street-hop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, better known by his stage name Portable, has publicly apologized to a pastor after slapping him during an altercation. The emotional apology came after a week of backlash on social media, where many Nigerians condemned the singer’s actions and demanded he make amends.
The incident, which took place in Portable’s bar, saw the pastor attempting to preach, which led to a confrontation between the two. Portable, known for his controversial actions, responded by slapping the preacher, sparking outrage among the public. A video of the altercation went viral, and many called for the singer to apologize.
Faced with widespread criticism, Portable finally met with the pastor in person to ask for forgiveness. In a heartfelt video that has also gone viral, the singer can be seen breaking down in tears as he admits to his wrongdoings. Portable expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating that his actions were wrong and not intended to harm anyone.
The reconciliation was made possible with the help of popular gospel singer, Testimony Jaga. Jaga, who played a key role in bringing the two together, had previously issued Portable an ultimatum, giving him three days to make things right. Following Jaga’s intervention, Portable publicly apologized and expressed his sincere regret.
In the emotional footage, Portable is seen on his knees, pleading with the pastor and the public for their forgiveness. His tearful apology has stirred mixed reactions online. While some netizens have praised Portable for humbling himself and making amends, others have questioned the sincerity of his apology, given his history of controversial behavior.
One online user, @DanielRegha, commented, “Portable crying means nothing, cos there’s no guarantee that he won’t repeat the same wrongful act in the near future if he finds himself in the same situation.” Others shared similar concerns, wondering whether the apology was a publicity stunt or a genuine show of remorse.
Despite the skepticism from some quarters, others were more sympathetic. @betty_nwabunike said, “Well, it’s good of him to apologize. We could say he is a humble man and can also be sensitive.”
