Controversial Penalty Earns Newcastle a Draw Against Manchester City

In a dramatic Premier League clash on September 28, 2024, Newcastle United secured a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at St. James’ Park, thanks to a controversial penalty won and converted by Anthony Gordon. This result dents City’s early hopes of a smooth path towards defending their Premier League title.

The match’s key moment occurred when City goalkeeper Ederson was booked after a challenge on Anthony Gordon, who was playing as Newcastle’s center-forward due to the injuries of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson. The referee awarded a penalty, deeming that Ederson had denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Gordon calmly stepped up and sent the City keeper the wrong way, leveling the score for Newcastle.

Manchester City had started the match on the front foot, with Josko Gvardiol scoring the opening goal in the first half. Gvardiol, playing as a left-back, found the back of the net after a well-worked play involving Jack Grealish. His goal put City ahead, and they looked in control for much of the first half.

However, the second half saw City struggling to break through Newcastle’s deep defensive setup. The absence of key players like Rodri, who is out for the season, and Kevin De Bruyne, continued to hinder Pep Guardiola’s side. Phil Foden had the best chance to restore City’s lead after a flick from Erling Haaland, but his shot went straight at Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Newcastle’s defense, bolstered by Pope’s solid performance, held firm as City piled on the pressure. Bernardo Silva’s powerful shot late in the game forced another fine save from Pope, but despite City’s efforts, they couldn’t find the winning goal.

City also had a moment of concern when Erling Haaland was caught by Dan Burn’s studs, leading to a nasty cut on his ankle. Though Haaland was able to continue, it highlighted a physical and intense match where both teams battled hard.

The result leaves Manchester City frustrated, particularly as they continue to struggle without Rodri and De Bruyne. They had lost their last four Premier League matches without both players, and while they avoided defeat this time, the draw adds to the pressure on their title defense.
