The Rivers State Police Command, in response to escalating violence, has intensified patrols across various local government areas to restore peace and ensure safety. The move follows recent unrest after local government elections, which saw reports of arson and explosions in secretariats throughout the state.
The patrol, led by Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Mustapha, began at the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area secretariat. The team then proceeded to the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, with plans to extend their presence to other affected locations. This security operation is part of a wider effort to restore calm after the disturbing incidents that took place following last Saturday’s elections.
The renewed security measures follow a directive from President Bola Tinubu, calling for urgent action to maintain law and order in Rivers State. Tinubu’s concerns were sparked by reports of violence that have raised tensions across the region. According to multiple sources, secretariats in several local government areas were targeted by acts of arson and explosions, creating a volatile post-election atmosphere.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep worry over the rising violence and called for restraint among political leaders and their supporters. He specifically urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara and all involved to ensure calm and respect the democratic process.
“The judiciary can settle all political disputes,” President Tinubu stated in his message, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law. He added, “Self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.”
