The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the sum of N50 million to be disbursed to the families of five police officers who tragically lost their lives in a motor accident in Kano State.
The fatal accident, which claimed the lives of five officers and left 11 others injured, occurred on September 24, 2024, on the Zaria-Kano Expressway. The officers were returning from election duty in Edo State when the unfortunate incident took place.
According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday, eight of the injured officers have since been discharged from the hospital, while three remain under medical care.
In response to the tragedy, the IGP swiftly took action to provide financial relief to those affected. He directed that N10 million be paid to each of the families of the five deceased officers, while the officers still hospitalized will receive N2 million each. The eight officers who have been discharged will also receive N500,000 each to assist in their recovery.
The official statement reads, “The Inspector-General of Police has approved the immediate payment of relief funds to the families of officers involved in a fatal motor accident on 24th September 2024, while returning from the Edo Elections Special Duty to the Kano State Command.
“The accident, which occurred along the Karfi Kura route, resulted in the loss of five officers, with 11 hospitalised following the incident. Eight individuals have been successfully discharged after receiving medical attention, while three others are still undergoing treatment.
“In response to this tragic event, the Inspector General of Police has taken decisive action to provide support to those affected, by approving compensatory payments of N10,000,000 to the families of the deceased, acknowledging their profound loss and offering assistance during this difficult period.
“The IGP has also approved the payment of N2,000,000 to those still receiving treatment, ensuring they receive the necessary medical support as they recuperate, and N500,000 to those who have been discharged after treatment.”
“The IGP reaffirms the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to supporting officers and their families during trying times. The IGP once again expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and prays for the quick recovery of those still receiving medical care.”
