The Federal Government has commenced the sale of subsidized rice in Ogun State, offering a 50kg bag for N40,000. The initiative, which started on Thursday in Abeokuta, is part of the government’s broader efforts to ease the financial burden on citizens, especially amid the country’s current economic challenges.
During the launch ceremony, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, explained that the subsidized rice program is one of several initiatives aimed at providing relief to Nigerians.
He emphasized that the government’s goal is to help reduce food inflation and improve the livelihoods of citizens. Kyari, who was represented by the State Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, highlighted that the distribution of the rice will be closely monitored to ensure transparency and fairness.
According to Kyari, various Federal Government agencies have been tasked with overseeing the rice distribution to ensure it reaches the intended beneficiaries.
He added that the process requires only a National Identification Number (NIN) and an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card for individuals to purchase the 50kg rice bags at the subsidized price of N40,000.
Kyari also commended Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State for his role in making the program a success in the state. He acknowledged the governor’s efforts in ensuring that Ogun became one of the first states to benefit from the initiative.
“Ogun has one of the most organized templates ensuring that this gets to the three Senatorial districts of the state and all at the grassroots,” Kyari said.
In response, Governor Abiodun praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its commitment to tackling food inflation and improving the welfare of Nigerians. He expressed gratitude to the President for prioritizing the agricultural sector and ensuring food security, particularly in the wake of the economic challenges brought about by the removal of the fuel subsidy.
“This is appreciated and welcomed, particularly following the removal of petroleum subsidy, as this will go a long way in cushioning the impact of the subsidy removal,” the governor noted.
