The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the successful restoration of the national grid after a brief disturbance earlier today.
The interruption, which occurred around 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, was caused by an incident at the Jebba Transmission Substation. The fault led to a temporary disruption in power supply to parts of the country.
In a statement released in Abuja, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, provided details on the situation and reassured the public that the issue had been promptly addressed by the company’s engineers.
According to her, the problem began when a current transformer in the 330kV substation exploded, leading to a disruption in the power system.
Mrs. Mbah explained that the TCN engineers at the Jebba station quickly sprang into action, isolating the damaged transformer and reconfiguring the busbar arrangement to restore power supply.
She said, “The engineers successfully carried out the necessary switchings by isolating the faulty current transformer, which allowed them to restore power to the station and other affected parts of the grid.”
The statement further elaborated on the cause of the disturbance, explaining that the explosion of the transformer activated the substation’s protection system.
“As expected, the protection system was activated, which promptly opened the busbars to curtail the explosion, thereby preventing the outbreak of fire and further damage to adjacent equipment. The action of the protection system led to a temporary disturbance on the grid,” Mbah noted.
The TCN reassured the public that the quick response from their engineers ensured that the power outage was only temporary and that efforts were made to prevent further damage. By swiftly addressing the fault, the engineers were able to restore the national grid and resume normal power transmission across the country.
This is not the first time the national grid has experienced disruptions, but the TCN has consistently emphasized its commitment to maintaining a reliable power supply. The prompt response to such incidents is seen as part of their ongoing effort to ensure minimal interruption to electricity service nationwide.
