JUST IN: Black Sunday in Anambra Community as Gunmen Kill at Least 16 During Traditional Festival

A tragic incident unfolded in Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday, October 20, 2024, as masked gunmen attacked and killed at least 16 people during a traditional celebration. The attack occurred during the Onwa Asaa festival, a popular cultural event in the town that typically brings joy and celebration to its residents.

According to local reports, the gunmen, who were said to be wearing masks and driving a black Lexus SUV, stormed a restaurant where many youths had gathered to relax and enjoy the festivities. The peaceful gathering quickly turned into a scene of horror as the gunmen opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen fired indiscriminately, killing several people on the spot.

A video circulating online, which was seen by local media, shows the grim aftermath of the attack, with bodies of victims lying lifeless on the ground. At least 10 people were confirmed dead at the scene, but the number of casualties later rose to 16, with most of the victims being young men.

Eyewitnesses described the chaos and panic that erupted as gunfire filled the air, sending people fleeing in all directions. One witness, who was present at the scene, recounted the terrifying experience to DAILY POST, saying, “It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was absolute chaos.”

The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this time, though the Anambra State Police have suggested that the incident was linked to cult-related violence. The attack has left the community in shock and mourning, and many residents are now demanding swift action from the government to restore peace and security to the area.

One local resident voiced the community’s frustration and fear, stating, “We urge the government to take immediate action. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security in our community. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has been marred by violence and bloodshed.”

In response to the attack, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and described it as a suspected cult-related clash. He assured the public that the police are working to restore order in the area.

SP Ikenga also stated that the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has already deployed additional anti-crime units to the scene in an effort to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of the residents. The police are also urging anyone with information about the attackers to come forward and assist with the investigation.

In his statement, SP Ikenga said, “The Command is aware of a suspected cult-related clash today, 20/10/2024, in Nibo, Awka South LG, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered immediate deployment of additional operatives to the area for necessary action. Preliminary reports of the incidents are still sketchy as the command calls on the witnesses of this incident to volunteer information that will help to identify the perpetrators for possible arrest.”
