Enugu Police Finalize Probe into Musician’s Death, Inspector Faces Disciplinary Action

The Enugu State Police Command has officially completed its investigation into the tragic shooting of Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, a well-known Ogene musician popularly known by his stage name, Igbo-Jah. Nwamba was allegedly killed by a police officer, sparking both public outrage and an internal investigation.

The incident, which took place on October 25, 2024, involved Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, a member of the Anti-Cultism unit within the Enugu Police. Joseph is now undergoing an “orderly room” trial, a disciplinary procedure commonly used by the Nigerian Police Force for addressing misconduct within its ranks.

According to police sources, the inspector’s actions during the incident were reportedly reckless, resulting in the death of Nwamba. Following the tragic event, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, issued a directive for an immediate reassessment of the Anti-Cultism unit.

This reassessment included the redeployment of SP Ekeleme Chidobe, who had previously been in charge of the Tactical Squad. By removing Chidobe from his position, Uzuegbu aims to enable a comprehensive review of the squad’s operational standards and methods.

In an official statement released by the police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, Commissioner Uzuegbu emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the investigation into Nwamba’s death was handled justly and transparently.

His statement read, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc (+), has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Officer in Charge of the Tactical Squad… to allow for a comprehensive review of the Squad’s operations.”
