BLACKOUT: FG Seeks Alternative Power Solutions for Northern Nigeria Amid Ongoing Outage

In response to a widespread power outage affecting the northern region of Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced active measures to restore electricity.

The blackout, which has left nearly 17 states in darkness, is attributed to recent vandalism along the critical Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, a primary conduit for power in the area.

During a briefing on Monday, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu provided an update following his meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House.

Adelabu outlined the government’s strategy to address the power crisis, explaining that they are pursuing alternative power routes to bring relief to the affected regions.

The current outage stems from a breach in the Shiroro-Kaduna line, which, according to Adelabu, has created substantial disruption across northern states.

In addition to dealing with this primary line’s restoration, the government is considering rerouting power through an alternative setup to help speed up the return of electricity.

The Minister shared, “We have also explored the alternative line of providing light to the north through the Ikot Ekpene sub station supplied from the Calabar plant.

“But the line got cut along the line, and we’re also trying to fix that. And if you remember that at the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting one of the approvals for the ministry of power was actually the upgrade of the Shiroro Kaduna transmission line, which is the major line that supply electricity to the northern part of the country.”

“We discussed the root cause of this, which was basically due to vandalization of the transmission lines of Shiroro Kaduna line, which is the major line that supply electricity to the north,” he said.
