Nigerian Police Pledge Justice in Bolt Driver Assault Case Involving Federal Lawmaker

The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice for Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver allegedly assaulted by a federal lawmaker in Abuja. The incident, which has sparked national outrage, involved Hon. Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State, who was captured on video striking the driver in an upscale area of Maitama, Abuja.

The assault reportedly occurred on October 27, 2023, as Abuwatseya attempted to deliver a package to Ikwechegh at a residence on Zamfara Crescent in Maitama. The altercation was recorded, and the video quickly spread across social media platforms, where Nigerians responded with shock and indignation. Many condemned the actions of the lawmaker, calling for accountability and urging the authorities to take immediate action to uphold justice.

In response to the outcry, the Nigeria Police Force has publicly assured citizens that they are taking the case seriously. On Wednesday morning, the police addressed the incident through a post on their official Facebook page.

They confirmed that an “impartial investigation” is now underway and promised a fair process. The police statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an impartial investigation into the matter and wishes to reaffirm its commitment and readiness to ensure justice is served accordingly.”

Adding to the drama, the lawmaker, facing criticism from both the public and his colleagues, issued an apology during the House plenary session on Tuesday. His apology did little to calm public sentiment, as Nigerians continue to question whether there will be real consequences for his actions. Many see this case as a test of the nation’s commitment to the rule of law and accountability, especially regarding those in positions of power.

Public pressure remains high, with civil society groups and concerned citizens closely monitoring the police investigation. The case is not only seen as a call for justice for Abuwatseya but also as a symbolic moment reflecting Nigerians’ growing impatience with perceived abuses of power. Online, social media users continue to demand updates and question the actions taken against the lawmaker. They hope that this case will mark a shift toward greater accountability for public officials.
