Abubakar Gumi, the representative for the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, has switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gumi’s defection was formally announced on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, during a plenary session in the House of Representatives.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, delivered the news by reading aloud Gumi’s defection letter on the House floor, confirming the change in political affiliation.
The move adds another seat to the APC’s representation in the House, strengthening the party’s position in Nigeria’s legislature.
According to Gumi, his decision to leave the PDP was driven by ongoing conflicts and divisions within the party’s structure in Zamfara.
In the letter, Gumi cited multiple issues that he claims have weakened the PDP’s effectiveness and unity in his constituency.
He pointed specifically to an unusual situation in which there are reportedly two individuals claiming the position of PDP Chairman in his area.
This division, he suggested, has caused significant internal and external turmoil within the local PDP leadership, undermining the party’s stability and effectiveness in the state.
“The Honourable member stated that there are two PDP Chairmen in his constituency, adding to the internal and external crisis within the party in his State. The party lacks structure in the State,” the Speaker explained.
