The community of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State is grieving the sudden loss of its Chairman, Oladotun Olakanle, who passed away early on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
Olakanle, a prominent figure in the Onigbongbo LCDA, was known for his dedication to his work and commitment to community development. He was 54 years old.
While the exact cause of his death remains unconfirmed, news of his passing spread quickly, casting a somber atmosphere over Onigbongbo. Olakanle’s sudden death came as a shock, especially since he was active and seen participating in various community events just days prior.
On Friday, November 1, he was actively involved in the distribution of vehicles to police units within his council area, a gesture aimed at enhancing local security efforts. This initiative was one of his administration’s latest moves to improve safety and welfare for the residents.
In addition to his recent efforts for security improvements, Olakanle had attended a social gathering on Thursday, October 31, in honor of the late Dr. Adesola Taiwo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and CEO of Adefemi Taiwo Hospitals.
Friends and colleagues who saw him at the event reported that he appeared healthy and in good spirits, making his sudden death even more difficult to process.
A close friend of Olakanle, who had also been at the event, shared the impact of the tragic news, stating, “We were at a party together on Thursday.
His death is still devastating to me.” Many in the community echoed these sentiments, recalling Olakanle’s approachable nature and his commitment to improving the quality of life for Onigbongbo residents.
Olakanle’s death also marks a sad coincidence, as he becomes the second consecutive chairman in Onigbongbo LCDA to pass away during their second term in office. His predecessor, Babatunde Oke, tragically died in office in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, casting a shadow on the council’s leadership succession once more.
