114 young individuals who were previously detained for participating in protests against governance issues in Nigeria have been released and brought to the State House Auditorium in Abuja.
Among the group are 30 minors, reflecting the widespread involvement of young people in the #EndBadGovernance movement across the nation. The release of these individuals follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, aimed at providing them a fresh start.
The detainees arrived at Aso Villa around 2:00 p.m. on November 5, 2024. They were welcomed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu in receiving them. After their release, they are set to be handed over to governors from their respective states, facilitating their return home.
Their freedom was secured through the intervention of Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, who played a central role in expediting the legal process.
Justice Obiora Egwatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the charges against these protesters, following a motion from the Attorney-General’s office to clear the accusations.
In attendance are Deputy Senate President Jubrin Barau, Chairman of the Committee on Appropriation Abubakar Bichi, as well as the Governors of Kaduna, Uba Sani, and Kano, Abba Yusuf.
Ministers of Education, Tunji Alausa; Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Nentawe Yilwatda; and Environment, Balarabe Lawal, are also present at the venue.
Others include the Ministers of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (Northwest), Abdullahi Yakasai.
