BREAKING: Chief of Army Staff Taoreed Lagbaja is Dead

The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has died at the age of 56. His passing was announced on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the official statement, Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after an illness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, offering heartfelt condolences to Lagbaja’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces. “President Tinubu expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time. He wishes Lt. General Lagbaja eternal peace and honors his significant contributions to the nation,” the statement read.

Lagbaja was appointed as the Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, shortly after President Tinubu took office. Throughout his career, he was known for his dedication and leadership, having served in various strategic roles, including as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.

The presidency noted that Lagbaja played vital roles in several internal security operations across Nigeria, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States. His extensive experience and military acumen were honed through rigorous training, including studies at the U.S. Army War College.

Lagbaja leaves behind his wife, Mariya, and two children, who now mourn the loss of a devoted family man and leader. In his absence, President Tinubu appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff, who was promoted and decorated as a Lieutenant General on Tuesday. President Tinubu expressed confidence in Oluyede, stating, “It is both an honour and a privilege to decorate you today.

“This recognition reflects your commitment and service to the Nigerian military, which speaks volumes through your exemplary record.

“We recognise all that you have been doing to ensure the country is safe and stable,” the President said.
