The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed on Monday that it responded to a total of 1,367 emergency cases across Lagos from January to October 2024.
According to Mr. Nosa Okunbor, the Head of LASEMA’s Public Affairs Unit, this year’s incidents reflect a wide range of emergencies, from vehicle accidents to medical and fire-related crises.
Breaking down the figures, Okunbor shared that January saw the agency attend to 141 cases, which gradually increased to 156 by February. The monthly totals varied throughout the year, with March reporting 148 cases, April 132, and May seeing another rise to 147.
In the summer months, LASEMA responded to 126 incidents in June, followed by 123 in July, 121 in August, 126 in September, and finally, October recorded 147 incidents.
“Since June 1, 2019, LASEMA has responded to a total of 7,809 emergencies,” Okunbor said, noting that road accidents were the most frequent emergencies, making up 50 vehicle-related cases in 2024 alone.
Next on the list were 43 truck and tanker-related incidents, 35 of which were accidents while eight involved breakdowns. Medical emergencies, totaling 20, ranked third among the categories handled this year.
In addition to vehicle and medical crises, fire incidents also posed significant challenges, with LASEMA attending to 17 fire emergencies. These included 16 fire outbreaks and one burnt vehicle.
Okunbor also discussed the regional spread of incidents across Lagos. Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA) recorded the highest number in October with 29 incidents. Other LGAs with high incident rates included Oshodi-Isolo with 20, Ikeja with 18, and Kosofe with 14 cases. Smaller incident numbers were noted in Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, and several other LGAs.
A few LGAs, including Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Badagry, recorded no incidents during this period, showing some variation in emergency trends across the state.
