A fierce gunfight broke out in Gatawa, a town in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, as soldiers and local hunters clash with notorious bandits led by the infamous Bello Turji. The battle, which began early this morning, has caused widespread panic and left the town in a state of lockdown.
Sources from Gatawa reported that the gunfire erupted around 6 a.m. when bandits attempted to invade the town. However, soldiers and local hunters swiftly intervened to prevent the attackers from entering.
“We are suspecting that Bello Turji is personally leading the fight. Fire exchange started around 6am and up till this time (2:45pm) that I am speaking with you, the fight is still on. The two sides are still exchanging fire,” one local source who wished to remain anonymous told DAILY TRUST.
The source further added that the town has been eerily quiet, with no movement of people in or out due to the ongoing battle.
The situation remains tense, and residents are uncertain about what will happen in the coming hours. Another source described the conflict as “the most terrible encounter between the soldiers and bandits” that the town has witnessed.
“We hope this will be the end of Bello Turji. Our hope is that more soldiers will be deployed to the area to support those on ground,” the second source added, fearing that the bandits may call for reinforcements.
Bello Turji, widely believed to be based in the forests of Shinkafi Local Government Area in Zamfara State, has long been a major threat in the region. His criminal operations extend into Sokoto, including the Sabon Birni, Isa, and Goronyo areas, where he has carried out numerous attacks.
