GWR confirms Nigerian doctor’s world record for largest drawing

Nigerian doctor and artist Fola David-Tolaram has earned a Guinness World Record for creating the largest individual drawing. This remarkable work, confirmed by Guinness World Records, measures an astonishing 1,004.7 square meters—equivalent to nearly four tennis courts in size. David-Tolaram’s project, titled The Unity of Diversity, celebrates Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, highlighting the nation’s colorful traditions, food, clothing, and festivals.

The massive artwork was created on the pitch of the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. David-Tolaram, 31, says he envisioned this drawing as a map of Nigeria that captures the diversity within the country. He explained, “Nigeria is a multi-cultural nation. I wanted to create something that speaks to that and give people an avenue to celebrate their cultures.”

To prepare for the project, David-Tolaram traveled across Nigeria, immersing himself in various cultures to gain inspiration. When he returned, he embarked on the six-day artistic journey using a 1,360 square-meter canvas. David-Tolaram used waterproof markers, spending two days just setting up the giant canvas.

As he began, David-Tolaram admitted to initial doubts, standing in silence for several minutes before starting. “I remember standing right in the center of this canvas… and feeling a lot of apprehension and fear,” he recalled. Yet, as soon as he made the first mark, his fears faded, and he continued with newfound determination.

Crowds gathered at the stadium to watch David-Tolaram’s progress, bringing energy and excitement to the monumental undertaking. Reflecting on this support, he described the scene as “electrifying.” Now recognized as a world record holder, David-Tolaram expressed his joy and pride, calling the achievement “absolutely unbelievable” and noting that he feels “honored, distinguished, and Officially Amazing.”
