The Nigerian gospel film industry is grieving the loss of Moses Korede Are, beloved for his role as “Baba Gbenro” in the widely-acclaimed Abattoir series produced by Mount Zion Films. Known for his compelling performances and impactful storytelling, Korede Are’s passing has left a significant void among fans and colleagues alike.

News of his death was first shared by fellow actor Oluwaseun Adejumobi, who took to Instagram on Thursday, expressing his sorrow with the words, “Heaven’s Gain Again. A General Has Gone to Rest.” Other gospel artists joined in mourning, including Zoe Adeola, who posted on X, “Rest in peace, Baba Gbenro. Your role in Abattoir will definitely leave a great memory of you in our minds. So painful.”

Another close associate, Michael Adelakun, founder of Paramount Ministry, confirmed the actor’s passing in a conversation with PUNCH Online. Adelakun mentioned that Baba Gbenro had been battling diabetes for some time, though he did not confirm if it was the cause of death.

Korede Are, born on June 11, 1959, in Kano State, Nigeria, pursued education across the country before establishing his legacy in gospel film. After completing his National Youth Service Corps program in Jigawa State, he founded Calvary Movies Drama Ministry on September 2, 1995, in Ogbomoso. This ministry, which included an online streaming branch called Calvary Movies Television, allowed him to promote Christian values through drama and evangelism.

Known for his powerful contributions to the gospel film industry, Baba Gbenro collaborated with prominent figures, including Toluwalope Israel Adegbo and Evangelist Damilola Mike-Bamiloye. His portrayal of Baba Gbenro in Abattoir resonated with audiences, solidifying his influence and leaving a lasting impact on the gospel film community in Nigeria.
