The Nigerian Super Eagles have officially qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, thanks to an unexpected result in a match between Libya and Rwanda.
Libya managed to edge past Rwanda with a narrow 1-0 victory in Kigali, which effectively solidified Nigeria’s place in the upcoming tournament, even though the Super Eagles themselves were not on the field for this game.
With Rwanda now sitting at just five points after five matches, they no longer have a chance to overtake Nigeria in Group D. This means that even if Rwanda wins their last game against Nigeria in Uyo, they will not be able to reach Nigeria’s current leading total of 10 points.
As it stands, Nigeria tops Group D with 10 points, followed by Benin with six points, Rwanda with five, and Libya at the bottom with four.
The group’s second qualification spot, however, is still up for grabs. Benin, holding onto six points, will face Nigeria in a critical match tonight, with hopes of securing their place in AFCON as well.
Meanwhile, Libya will play their final group-stage match against Benin on Monday, closing out the qualification series for Group D.
