The Ogun State government has declared a public holiday today, Friday, November 15, 2024, allowing civil servants to prepare for and participate in the upcoming local government elections set for Saturday.
This decision, announced through a formal circular from the Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, aims to foster active civic participation by enabling government workers to return to their local communities and vote.
Governor Dapo Abiodun approved the holiday specifically to encourage greater turnout across Ogun’s 20 local government areas, where residents will elect local council chairpersons and ward councillors.

The statement read: “Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun approved the work-free day to enable civil servants to participate fully in the forthcoming local government elections, scheduled to take place across the state’s 20 local governments and 237 wards on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
“The work-free day aims to ensure active participation in the electoral process, allowing citizens to exercise their civic duties without hindrance.
“This move demonstrates Governor Abiodun’s commitment to promoting democratic participation and civic engagement in Ogun State.
“This decision aligns with Governor Abiodun’s efforts to prioritise the welfare and participation of citizens in democratic processes.”
Permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies were advised to ensure compliance with the directive.
In another statement, it said, “Ogun State Local Government Election will be held on Saturday 16th November 2024. Movement of people and vehicles will be restricted between 8 am to 5 pm. Kindly plan your movement, communicate to family, friends and loved ones.”
The election, organized by the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, will involve over 237 wards where residents will choose local representatives. Leaders across government offices, including permanent secretaries and agency heads, have been instructed to enforce the work-free directive, ensuring full compliance by civil servants.
