The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the November 16, 2024, governorship election in Ondo State. The announcement came after a keenly contested election involving several candidates.
Governor Aiyedatiwa secured the highest number of votes, defeating his closest rival, Ajayi Agboola of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other notable contenders, including Olorunfemi Festus of the Labour Party (LP) and Abbas Mimiko of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The results were announced by INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Akinwumi Olayemi Durotimi, who also serves as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja. According to Prof. Durotimi, Aiyedatiwa garnered 366,781 votes, while Ajayi Agboola of the PDP trailed with 117,845 votes. The Labour Party candidate managed 1,162 votes.
Declaring the results, Prof. Durotimi stated, “Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the APC having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of lawful votes cast, is hereby returned elected.”
This victory marks another milestone in the political journey of Aiyedatiwa, who took over as governor on December 27, 2023, following the passing of his predecessor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
