Gunmen launched a deadly attack on a police convoy in Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, killing one officer and critically injuring another. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday and has sent shockwaves through the community.
The convoy, reportedly assigned to a federal lawmaker, was ambushed while traveling in a Toyota Corolla. According to police sources, the assailants, dressed in black and wearing police jackets, blocked the vehicle’s path before opening fire. The lawmaker was not present in the convoy at the time of the attack, which also involved a driver accompanying the officers.
One policeman was killed instantly during the gunfire, while the second officer sustained severe injuries and is feared dead.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers fled the scene as officers from the Ubakala Police Division arrived in response to the gunshots.
This attack follows a similar incident just four days earlier, where unidentified gunmen killed two soldiers at a checkpoint in Umuopara, near the Abia-Imo state border.
