Rwanda defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1 in their final Group D Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match. The game took place on Monday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, leaving Nigerian fans stunned.
Despite the unexpected loss, Nigeria had already secured qualification for AFCON 2025 in Morocco, finishing at the top of their group with 11 points. The result, however, highlighted the determination and fighting spirit of the Rwandan team, who were considered underdogs going into the match.
The Super Eagles started strong, and their efforts paid off in the 59th minute when Samuel Chukwueze found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. However, the lead was short-lived. Rwanda fought back, and Aimable Mutinzi equalized in the 72nd minute, leaving the Nigerian defense scrambling.
Just three minutes later, Imanishimwe Nshuti delivered the decisive blow with a well-timed goal that completed Rwanda’s comeback. The Rwandan side held on to their lead for the remainder of the match, securing a historic victory against one of Africa’s football giants.
