Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has paid tribute to Chief Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a dedicated nationalist, a strong advocate for democracy, and a leader who always stood for his people.
Obasanjo, who is currently in Ethiopia for the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, expressed deep sorrow over Adebanjo’s passing. He noted that the news came as a shock, especially since he had recently visited Adebanjo at his residence in Lekki on February 3, 2025. While Adebanjo appeared fragile, Obasanjo said he never expected him to pass away so soon.
In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo described Adebanjo as a “foremost nationalist and patriot” who spent his life fighting for democracy and justice. As a founding member of the Action Group (AG), Adebanjo was deeply committed to ensuring that politics was about serving the people rather than personal gain.
Obasanjo noted that Adebanjo’s courage and determination stood out, especially during difficult times when his life was at risk. He recalled that although they had disagreements over the years, they both shared the same goal of making Nigeria better.
Obasanjo also praised Adebanjo’s consistent push for the restructuring of Nigeria, stating that his dream of a reformed nation was one he fought for until his last days.
“Until his death, he fought with courage and tenacity to see to the restructuring of the Nigerian nation. It is unfortunate that his dream couldn’t be actualized in his lifetime,” Obasanjo stated.
He offered his condolences to Adebanjo’s family and the entire country, praying for his soul to rest in peace.
“I will undoubtedly miss my beloved Egbon Ayo, but I hold on to the good and remarkable memories we shared until we meet again,” Obasanjo concluded.
