Abiola’s Legacy Lives On Through Tinubu, Says Vice President Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that the spirit of Chief MKO Abiola’s struggle remains alive under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shettima described Tinubu as one of Abiola’s closest allies in the democratic movement who has now become the torchbearer of the same dream Abiola once fought for.

The Vice President made these remarks at a public lecture held to mark Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Anniversary at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. Speaking to dignitaries, Shettima reflected on the symbolism of Tinubu’s presidency in relation to Abiola’s vision.

“It is this faith in the promise of Abiola’s vision that has renewed the hope of this nation. And in the great theatre of providence, history has returned the baton to one of Abiola’s most trusted lieutenants in the struggle for the soul of democracy in Nigeria: His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR,” Shettima said.

He also described the late MKO Abiola as a true patriot who gave up everything for Nigeria’s democracy, noting that his sacrifice has become a guiding force for the country’s democratic path.

“Rather than dying in vain, the late Abiola’s dream became a collective covenant and unbroken resolve for Nigerians to stand for what is right,” Shettima stated.

Shettima also acknowledged the efforts of unknown heroes who have contributed to Nigeria’s democratic gains over the years. He said many gave up their freedom and lives so the country could enjoy civil rule today. He noted that the current administration is committed to honoring their efforts by building a government that listens and includes all citizens.

“There is no doubt that President Tinubu has kept that covenant, extending a hand across political divides, ethnic frontiers, and generational gaps to build a Nigeria that works for everyone,” he added.

Calling for unity and active participation, Shettima urged Nigerians to protect democracy at all costs. He said the responsibility of nurturing democracy must be shared by all, not just one leader.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to support Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it is a national duty to help deepen democratic values and strengthen good governance.

Meanwhile, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, also spoke at the event. He acknowledged the heroes of democracy and encouraged citizens to continue supporting the administration’s vision for national progress.

In a keynote speech, Professor Samuel Egwu said true democracy depends on strong commitment from both leaders and citizens. He stressed the need for leaders to put national interest above personal ambition.

Cameroonian High Commissioner to Nigeria, HE Salaheddine Ibrahim, commended Nigeria’s democratic unity and urged citizens not to give up on sustaining democratic governance.

Also speaking, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, said the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day reflects the determination of Nigerians to protect their democratic rights. He noted that Tinubu’s journey from activism to presidency is proof of Nigeria’s long-standing desire for a people-driven government.
