Abuja, Surrounding Areas to Regain Full Power Supply by February 23 – AEDC

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has assured electricity consumers in Abuja and neighboring areas that full power supply will be restored by February 23, 2025. This comes after weeks of outages caused by the vandalization of an underground transmission line near Millennium Park in Abuja.

In a power update shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, AEDC stated that the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is actively working to repair the damaged 132kV Katampe–Central Area underground transmission cable.

The company noted that engineers have been working around the clock to ensure the restoration of power to affected areas, including Wuye, Utako, Jabi, Mabushi, Katampe Districts, Life Camp, Wuse Zones 1-7, Wuse 2, Maitama, and parts of the Central Business District.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the prolonged outage and assured residents that efforts are being made to speed up repairs. “TCN has committed to complete the work and restore normal power supply to Central Area Transmission Substation (AT5) on February 23, 2025,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, AEDC also reported that at least 188 locations under its franchise in the Federal Capital Territory have experienced power outages over the past two months due to various technical faults. Between January 1 and February 11, 2025, numerous areas and businesses were affected by blackouts.

A review of 26 public notices posted by AEDC on its X handle revealed that the power disruptions were mainly due to technical faults on feeders supplying electricity to different areas. Despite collecting N229.39 billion in electricity revenue within the first 11 months of 2024, these challenges persist.

The outages were widespread, affecting major locations such as:

  • January 4: The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and surrounding areas.
  • January 5: Agwan Koro, Madalla, Police Estate, Efab Estate Dakwa, FHA Zuba, and nearby locations.
  • January 6: Garki Area 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, parts of Durumi, Diplomatic Drive, National Hospital, and key embassies.
  • January 18: Bolingo Hotel, Cool FM, Kubwa, FCDA, Kubwa Extension, Army Scheme, and surrounding areas.
  • January 30: Banex Plaza and neighboring districts.
  • February 11: Army Barracks, Water Works, Masuga Kontagora, and other communities.

AEDC has assured customers that its technical team is working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. It also stated that while repair work on the damaged transmission line continues, load management will be implemented to optimize the available electricity supply.

The company noted, “Our dedicated technical team is working tirelessly to restore power as quickly as possible. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appeal for your patience.”
