The Adamawa State Government is ramping up efforts to prevent the spread of Hemorrhagic Septicaemia, a deadly cattle disease, following reports of over 1,000 cow deaths in neighboring Taraba State.
Dr. Suleiman Aminu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture, addressed the media on Saturday, revealing the urgent measures being taken. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and quick action to safeguard Adamawa’s livestock.
“Confirmed cases of the disease in Gembu, Taraba, and its spread to other areas have prompted the ministry to summon all Divisional Veterinary Officers. Their task is to intensify examinations and preventive actions to stop the disease from crossing into Adamawa,” stated Dr. Aminu.
Hemorrhagic Septicaemia, a bacterial disease, primarily affects cattle but can also impact buffaloes, goats, and pigs. Symptoms include high fever, swelling (especially around the neck), depression, and breathing difficulties. The disease is highly fatal, often leading to death within 24 hours.
Dr. Aminu noted that while samples are still undergoing testing at the National Veterinary Research Institute Laboratory in Vom, Plateau, preliminary confirmations from Taraba necessitate immediate response. Taraba State has already initiated plans for a mass vaccination campaign.
In anticipation of potential outbreaks, Adamawa’s Ministry of Livestock and Aquaculture has proactively sent a request to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for approval to purchase necessary drugs for a mass vaccination drive.
Residents of Adamawa are urged to stay alert and report any suspected cases of the disease to local veterinary clinics or ministry officials. The goal is to ensure rapid response and containment.
The affected areas in Taraba, including Sardauna Local Government Area, share borders with several LGAs in Adamawa, such as Toungo, Ganye, Jada, Mayo-Belwa, Demsa, Numan, and Lamurde. This proximity increases the risk of the disease spreading if not swiftly managed.
