AFCON Qualifiers: Lookman Misses Training, as Ola Aina Returns To Clubside

The Super Eagles are gearing up for their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda’s Amavubi, but their preparations have hit a few hurdles. On Saturday, Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was notably absent from training at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Lookman, who plays for Italian club Atalanta, picked up a knock during Thursday’s 1-1 draw against Benin Republic. He was substituted late in that game, making way for midfielder Frank Onyeka. While the team is eager to have him on the pitch on Monday, his fitness remains uncertain. Team officials plan to assess his condition during their final training session on Sunday.

In another development, Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has returned to England. His Premier League club requested his release ahead of their critical fixture against Arsenal. Since Nigeria has already secured qualification for AFCON 2025, the team granted Aina permission to leave camp.

Additionally, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has departed to be with his family following the death of his father.
