Nigeria is set to kick off its campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with a crucial match against Benin on Wednesday. The Super Eagles, led by caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen, are eager to avenge their previous loss to Benin in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, where they were defeated 2-1.
Eguavoen stepped in as a late replacement after German coach Bruno Labbadia reportedly declined the role due to a disagreement over tax arrangements with the Nigeria Football Federation.
Labbadia was initially lined up to face Benin’s coach Gernot Rohr, who had previously managed Nigeria for five years before being dismissed. Rohr’s victory over Nigeria was particularly significant, given his history with the Super Eagles.
The loss to Benin was a tough blow for Nigeria, leading to the departure of former coach Finidi George after only four matches in charge. The Super Eagles are determined to turn the tide this time, especially with an array of attacking talent at their disposal, including reigning African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Ademola Lookman. The match will be held in Uyo, a southeastern city in Nigeria, and is expected to be a high-stakes showdown.
Elsewhere, other notable opening-round AFCON qualifiers will take place. Cameroon faces Namibia amidst ongoing disputes between the country’s sports ministry and the football federation led by Samuel Eto’o. Originally scheduled for Douala, the match venue has been a point of contention, with suggestions to move it to either Yaounde or Garoua.
In Group C, Egypt will take on Cape Verde, hoping to bounce back from a disappointing exit in the last Cup of Nations. Despite playing at home, Egypt will be cautious of Cape Verde, who managed a last-minute draw against them in the previous tournament.
Ivory Coast, the reigning Cup of Nations champions, will clash with Zambia in Group G. Ivory Coast will be without Sebastien Haller, who is busy finalizing a transfer deal. Zambia, who have returned to the competition after missing out on three editions, will also miss their forward Patson Daka due to injury.
Morocco, already qualified as hosts for the 2025 AFCON, will face Gabon in Group B as part of their preparations. Meanwhile, South Africa is set to play Uganda in Group K, but will be missing key players like captain Ronwen Williams and forward Percy Tau.
