Popular Nigerian artist, Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington, has been taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force. The arrest occurred on Wednesday in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, while the singer was performing at an event.
Human rights lawyer and legal representative for the musician, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the incident through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Adeyanju stated, “Our client, Speed Darlington, a.k.a AKPI, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police in Owerri at his show upon return to Nigeria.”
Details regarding the specific reason for the arrest remain unclear as of now. However, the development follows a previous run-in with the authorities earlier this year. Speed Darlington was previously apprehended in Lagos and subsequently transferred to Abuja.
That arrest was linked to allegations of cyberstalking fellow musician Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy.
During the earlier incident, the singer was detained by the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja’s Guzape district. He was later granted bail.
