The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has put forward 31 candidates for chairmanship positions and 368 candidates for councillorship roles in anticipation of the Local Government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.

These candidates emerged from the party primaries held statewide on Saturday. The event was marked by its peaceful and orderly conduct, which has been praised by various stakeholders.

Governor Umo Eno, speaking from his Nsit-Ubium Local Government area, expressed his satisfaction with the peaceful nature of the primaries. He attributed the smooth proceedings to the prevailing peace in the state and the positive atmosphere fostered by his administration. “I want to appreciate all of us for the peaceful conduct of the primaries. The success of our party primaries is largely due to the peace enjoyed in our state and the general disposition of my administration,” Eno stated.

Governor Eno also extended his congratulations to Mr. Alfred Charles, the newly nominated chairmanship candidate for Nsit Ubium, and all other successful councillorship candidates. He reaffirmed his commitment to launching and implementing more youth welfare programs, emphasizing the need for the new candidates to uphold the party’s democratic values and contribute to community development under his ARISE agenda.

In Oron Local Government, Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi commended the orderly nature of the primaries, noting that the PDP had once again demonstrated a high standard of “orderliness and peace” in its operations.

State PDP Chairman Aniekan Akpan, who attended the nomination in Ukanafun Local Government, praised the delegates and party members for their exemplary conduct. He described the successful primaries as a clear indication of the party’s preparedness to triumph in the upcoming polls and continue delivering quality governance.

In Abak Local Government, the primaries concluded without incident, with delegates gathering at the Independence Hall to elect Mrs. Ime Charles as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming local government elections.

Following the event, Speaker of the State House Assembly, Udeme Otong, former National Assembly member Aniekan Umanah, and other local leaders expressed confidence in a substantial victory for the PDP in the October elections.
