The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom State has suspended its planned strike after Governor Umo Eno approved a new minimum wage agreement. The decision, announced on Wednesday by NLC Akwa Ibom Chairman, Sunny James, came as a major relief for workers across the state.
Under the new agreement, the state government will pay workers a minimum wage of ₦80,000, starting from November 1, 2024. This decision also includes an increase in monthly pensions for retirees by ₦32,000, ensuring that senior citizens benefit from the improved package. The move aligns with the guidelines issued by the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission in a circular dated September 27, 2024.
Speaking on the matter, Sunny James stated, “Following the signing of the New Minimum Wage Agreement on December 3, 2024, between the Government of Akwa Ibom and Organized Labour, we notify workers that the State Government has agreed to pay ₦80,000 as directed by Governor Eno.”
He further explained that November 2024 salaries had already been disbursed and assured workers that the arrears for the wage difference would be cleared by February 2025. December salaries will fully reflect the new wage structure.
The NLC expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for his proactive approach and commitment to workers’ welfare. Workers have been encouraged to resume duties immediately, as the indefinite strike planned for December 4, 2024, has now been called off.
