Alaafin’s Coronation: New Era For Oyo – Tinubu

Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade has officially been crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The grand coronation event, held at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo Town, drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

In a message delivered during the event, President Tinubu noted the historical importance of the Alaafin’s stool and its continuing relevance in modern Nigeria. He described the new monarch’s ascension as not only a joyful moment for the people of Oyo but also a cultural milestone for the entire Yoruba nation.

“This historic occasion is not just a celebration for the great people of Oyo but for the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole,” the president said in his address. He also quoted the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, saying, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture are like a tree without roots.”

Tinubu noted that Oba Owoade’s reign begins during a challenging period for Nigeria, but stressed that traditional rulers like the Alaafin play a vital role in promoting peace and preserving cultural identity. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with traditional leaders to ensure stability and development.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, who officially presented the staff and instrument of office to the new Alaafin, spoke mostly in Yoruba, assuring the public that the selection of Oba Owoade followed due traditional process. He revealed that despite various pressures, the kingmakers chose the candidate approved by Ifa divination.

“We have all witnessed the official coronation of his Imperial Majesty, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I,” said Makinde. “The choice of the new Alaafin was not influenced by anyone. Due process was followed.”

Oba Owoade, in his first speech as king, noted the importance of unity among the people of Oyo, both at home and abroad. He encouraged sons and daughters of the land to return and contribute to rebuilding their community.

“There is strength in unity. We must work together with honesty and focus to bring our sons and daughters back home, not just to ask why things are done a certain way, but to be part of building a greater Oyo,” he said.

The monarch pledged to lead with fairness, openness, and dedication to development. He promised to use his connections and knowledge to attract investment and drive transformation in the town.

Oba Owoade had earlier received his staff of office at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan on January 13, 2025. He also completed the required traditional rites, known as Oro Ipebi, on March 29, ahead of the official coronation ceremony.

The event was well attended by key figures including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams. Several political leaders and royal fathers were also present.

The new Alaafin succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away in April 2022 at the age of 83. His long reign was marked by efforts to revive Yoruba festivals and cultural heritage, which brought global attention to Oyo’s history and traditions. Oba Adeyemi was known for promoting Yoruba identity and heritage both at home and in the diaspora.
