Retired Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, a former Chief of Army Staff, has called on all Nigerians to receive mandatory military training, starting with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He believes this will help promote unity, discipline, and strength as the country faces increasing security and social problems.
Ihejirika made this statement during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 18 Alumni Association held in Abuja on Friday night. He shared memories from his early days in the military and the strong bonds formed with other officers. He noted that the discipline and love for the country taught during their training played a big role in shaping their careers and how they served Nigeria.
“Given the current situation of things in our country, I believe it’s time we start thinking about mandatory military training for our citizens. We can start with the National Youth Service. This will help us build a generation of Nigerians who understand sacrifice, responsibility, and patriotism,” he said.
Ihejirika also praised the government’s decision to bring back the old national anthem, saying it helps bring people together. He noted that the line “Though tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand” shows the true meaning of serving the nation and sharing a common identity.
He expressed worry about how the anthem is now often just played for show at official events. “It should be a daily reminder of our oath of allegiance. It must return to schools, communities, and national ceremonies,” he added.
Sharing his own story, Ihejirika talked about growing up in a small village in Abia and how military training changed his life. He thanked his colleagues and mentors for their help during his rise to become Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff.
He also spoke highly of the current leaders in the Nigerian Armed Forces. “Many of the officers leading today served in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other conflict zones. They have earned their stars through real battle experience and are doing remarkably well,” he noted.
Finally, Ihejirika urged Nigerian leaders at all levels to focus on peace and stability. He reminded them that no position can last without unity among the people.
