Popular Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, has spoken out regarding claims that he was involved in legal issues surrounding controversial social media personality, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky. The statement comes after accusations surfaced that Falz assisted Bobrisky in securing a VIP section during his time at a Correctional Centre, a claim the rapper firmly denies.
In a recent development, Falz’s legal team, Falana & Falana Chambers, issued a formal letter to social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, demanding a retraction of the statements made against Falz. The allegations stemmed from a viral post suggesting that Falz financially aided Bobrisky with N3 million to secure favorable treatment during his legal troubles earlier this year.
The letter, dated September 26, 2024, highlighted the sequence of events, clarifying that while Bobrisky did indeed reach out to Falz, there was no agreement or financial assistance provided. Falz’s lawyer, Taiwo E. Olawanle, stated that Bobrisky initially contacted the rapper for legal advice. However, Bobrisky soon turned the conversation towards requesting financial help, specifically asking for N3 million to allegedly pay officials at the Correctional Centre in exchange for VIP privileges.
The letter explained, “Mr Idris Okuneye (AKA Bobrisky) contacted our client on the 4th of May 2024, seeking advice. During the call, he claimed he needed N3 million to secure a VIP section at the Correctional Centre. Our client, however, advised him against paying any money, stating it was unnecessary.”
Despite Falz’s refusal to provide financial assistance, Bobrisky reportedly insisted on his request, complaining that his legal team had mishandled his case by advising him to plead guilty to the charges against him. Falz maintained his stance, advising Bobrisky not to pay for any special treatment in prison.
The controversy escalated when VeryDarkMan made a public statement on social media, alleging that Falz had been involved in a conspiracy to assist Bobrisky financially and that there were other unfounded claims about the rapper’s involvement. The post implied that Falz and his father were involved in inappropriate activities surrounding the case, including insinuations about their personal lives.
In response, Falz’s legal team demanded an immediate retraction of the defamatory claims, as well as a public apology from VeryDarkMan on all platforms where the accusations were published. The letter warned that failure to comply within 24 hours would lead to legal action, including a demand for monetary damages to repair the harm done to Falz’s reputation.
Meanwhile, a viral video shared by VeryDarkMan also included allegations from Bobrisky that he had paid N15 million to unnamed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges. Bobrisky has since denied the bribery claims, and the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, has called for an investigation into the matter.
