Amaechi: Rivers Political Crisis Rooted in Money Disputes, Not Governance

Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has stated that the ongoing conflict between the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, is centered on financial disagreements rather than governance issues.

Speaking in an interview with DW Africa on Saturday, Amaechi claimed that the feud was about the control and distribution of state funds. He also criticized the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, calling it unconstitutional.

“The fight between the current governor of Rivers State and the FCT minister is about sharing money. If not, what is the quarrel?” Amaechi questioned. He further remarked that Nigerians no longer challenge corruption, as there has been little public outcry over the crisis.

Amaechi strongly opposed the federal government’s intervention, arguing that the president acted beyond his constitutional powers. He referenced Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, which outlines how a governor can be removed—through death, resignation, or impeachment—but does not provide for presidential intervention in this manner.

“We are now denied democracy. Rivers State is the only state in the country currently not enjoying democracy. They have imposed military rule on us,” he stated.

He also suggested that the president’s actions were politically motivated, possibly aimed at weakening opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. “Rumours are everywhere that if any governor is not careful, the president will remove you. So the Rivers issue is about sharing money and 2027 politics,” he said.

Amaechi questioned the justification for the emergency rule, arguing that insecurity in other parts of Nigeria had not led to similar actions. He dismissed claims that a pipeline explosion was a valid reason for the decision, pointing out that other regions facing serious security challenges had not been placed under emergency rule.

“The governor has no responsibility for the blown pipes in Rivers. Security responsibility rests solely on the President. Why punish a man who did not commit any offence?” Amaechi asked.

He urged the people of Rivers State to reject the emergency rule and protest against what he called an undemocratic move.
