The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the public to disregard the recent social media rumors concerning a list of ambassadorial nominees, which it says is completely false and misleading.
In a statement issued to the media, Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, clarified that the ambassadorial appointments have not yet been finalized. The Ministry also made it clear that only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the authority to make such appointments, and no official list of nominees has been presented.
“Kindly disregard the frenzy about the ambassadorial list,” the statement read. “Be rest assured that, when it is ready, Mr. President will transmit the list of nominees to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation.”
The Ministry also assured Nigerians that the public would be informed through official channels once the final list of nominees is prepared. According to the statement, no action would be taken until the list has gone through the proper process and is ready for submission.
The issue comes at a time when there is growing public interest in the future of Nigeria’s diplomatic relations, especially after the recall of all ambassadors in September 2023. The recall of ambassadors raised many questions about the future direction of Nigeria’s foreign policy and the appointments of new diplomatic representatives.
In response to the ongoing public discussion, the Ministry stressed the importance of relying only on official information, especially when dealing with sensitive matters such as diplomatic appointments. The public was reminded that only official announcements from the Ministry or the President’s office should be considered credible.
