Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to keep Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford despite recent comments from the player hinting at a possible departure. Rashford, a product of United’s youth academy, has spent two decades at the club, making 426 appearances and scoring 138 goals since his debut in 2016.
However, the 27-year-old forward has struggled with his form over the past year and a half, culminating in his exclusion from England’s Euro squad this summer. Last weekend, Rashford was also absent from the squad during United’s derby defeat against Manchester City.
In an interview with journalist Henry Winter on Tuesday, Rashford mentioned that he might be ready to move on from the club, seeking a “new challenge.” When asked about these remarks during a press conference on Wednesday, Amorim revealed that he hadn’t yet spoken to the forward but remains optimistic about his future with United.
“No (I’ve not spoken to him),” Amorim said. “Not yet. It was yesterday (when) I gave the day off to the lads, so he’s our player and he’s ready for the next game.”
The manager emphasized Rashford’s value to the club, stating, “Of course, because this kind of club needs big talents and he’s a big talent. So, he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus.”
Amorim believes Rashford’s quest for a new challenge could be fulfilled by working to restore Manchester United’s former glory. With the club currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, Amorim acknowledged the uphill battle ahead but framed it as a unique opportunity.
“We have here a new challenge, it’s a tough one,” he said. “For me, it’s the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation… This is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
