Another LP Lawmaker Defects To APC

A member of the Labour Party (LP) in the House of Representatives, Rep. Dalyop Chollom, representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency in Plateau State, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made on Tuesday by Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen, who read the lawmaker’s letter of defection during a House session.

Rep. Chollom cited internal issues within the Labour Party as the main reason for his departure. According to the Speaker, the lawmaker explained that his decision came after “deep reflection” and was influenced by his desire to ensure the political future of his constituents. Chollom believes joining the APC would better enable him to serve his people effectively.

The defection sparked debate in the House. Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenged the move, referencing Section 68 (1) (d) of the Constitution. He argued that the defection was invalid unless the lawmaker provided proof of resignation from the LP. Chinda stated, “If you say the letter he wrote is in order, you declare his seat vacant.”

The Speaker, however, ruled Chinda out of order, saying he was satisfied with the documents provided by the defecting lawmaker.

Rep. George Ozodinobi of the Labour Party also expressed disappointment, claiming the party had no internal crisis, contrary to Chollom’s claims. The defection follows a wave of similar moves, with five lawmakers—four from the LP and one from the PDP—recently joining the APC. Senator Samuel Bako Lalong was present during Chollom’s announcement, underscoring the growing trend of political realignment within the legislature.
