The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has said that discussions are ongoing between the ruling party and the National Assembly to make it possible for Nigerians living abroad to vote in future elections.
Speaking during the inauguration of the APC France chapter’s new executive team in Paris on Monday, Ganduje explained that the move is part of the party’s commitment to ensure all Nigerians, no matter where they live, are included in the political process.
The statement, issued by Ganduje’s Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, noted that the APC will partner with relevant agencies to make this goal a reality.
He also assured the audience that the APC remains stable and strong, adding that the party’s internal peace is attracting new members from opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
“We appreciate you for holding the banner of our party, expanding its membership, and supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, especially in light of the critical reforms he is undertaking,” Ganduje said.
He also claimed that better funding is now available for capital projects and that both state governors and local government chairmen are seeing the benefits. According to him, the APC respects its constitution and practices internal democracy, something he believes sets the party apart from others facing internal problems.
Ganduje also shared his belief that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be re-elected in 2027 with the support of Nigerians at home and abroad.
In her address, Hajjiya Amina Baba-Suzuki, the newly sworn-in Chairperson of the APC France chapter, noted that Nigerians in the diaspora are not just economic contributors but also have a political role in national development.
She called for stronger support from the party for APC chapters overseas, saying they play an important part in promoting Nigeria’s image and interests globally.
The demand for diaspora voting is not new. For years, many Nigerians living abroad have asked for a legal structure that allows them to vote even while outside the country.
Back in late 2024, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas and lawmaker Sadiq Abdullahi introduced a bill that would let eligible Nigerians in the diaspora vote in elections organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
However, the bill has not yet reached its second reading in the National Assembly.
