APC Reveals Tinubu’s Position Over Ganduje’s Resignation, Kwankwaso’s Defection

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that talks are ongoing to select a new National Chairman, following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje from the position last week.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics, a programme aired by Channels Television, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, shared that the party is already taking steps to fill the leadership role.

According to Morka, although no date has been fixed, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will soon hold a meeting to begin the process of appointing a new chairman.

“This is an extraordinary situation where the National Chairman of our party has resigned, and we will take steps immediately to fill that vacancy,” Morka said.

He noted that talks with key figures within the party had already started. While explaining the timeline, Morka said they were working on getting all necessary leaders aligned to agree on a date for the NEC meeting.

“As we speak, that process has been triggered, and consultations are ongoing. We hope that in the coming days we will be at a point where we can identify a date agreeable to all of those who need to be there to make this happen. We will continue from where Ganduje has stopped.”

On the rumour that former Kano governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may join the APC, Morka made it clear that there had been no internal discussion about that possibility.

He stated, “The party I speak for has said nothing about Kwankwaso possibly joining. We have not made that determination and are not able to make it at the moment.”

He also noted that the APC remains stable, despite what some may think. “The party is running as it should run. People are entitled to have their moments, but that does not indicate dysfunction,” Morka added.

Addressing questions on whether President Bola Tinubu had a hand in Ganduje’s resignation, Morka said there was no official word from the President, and any claims otherwise were mere assumptions.

“The President is at liberty to speak at any moment on any issue. He has not spoken, so people will speculate. But we cannot act based on speculation,” he said.

Ganduje’s resignation was formally made public through a statement issued on Thursday, June 27. In his letter, he thanked President Tinubu for trusting him with the responsibility of leading the party.

Ganduje stepped down to focus on “urgent and important personal matters,” according to the party’s official statement.

Following his resignation, Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, was asked by President Tinubu to step in as Acting Chairman until the NEC meets and decides on a permanent replacement.

Ganduje became APC’s National Chairman in August 2023, taking over after Abdullahi Adamu stepped down. His term as chairman faced criticism from some party members who argued that his appointment went against agreed zoning patterns within the party.

Before his national party role, Ganduje served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023. In January 2025, he was appointed as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and he is reportedly being considered for another key role as a non-career ambassador.
