The Ondo State chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) clashed on Sunday over alleged diversion of local government funds by the state government.
The SDP has raised strong accusations against the APC-led administration in the state, saying the current government is taking control of funds meant for local government use.
According to the SDP, these funds, which are sent from the federal government to support development in local areas, are not being used for their original purpose.
In a statement released by the SDP State Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Akinbuli, the party said it received reliable information that the state government is taking local government allocations and redirecting them for other uses.
The statement explained that this action goes against the constitutional rule that allows local governments to operate independently.
The statement read, “We have credible information that federal allocations meant for local governments are being collected by the state government. This revelation raises serious concerns about fiscal federalism, local autonomy, and the principles of democracy.
“It is unconscionable that funds intended for grassroots development and service delivery are being siphoned off, depriving local communities of essential services and infrastructure.
“The implications of this action are far-reaching. Local governments are being denied the resources they need to deliver on their constitutional responsibilities, from healthcare and education to infrastructure and security. This not only undermines the effectiveness of local governments but also erodes trust in the system and perpetuates underdevelopment.”
In response, the APC pushed back strongly. In a statement issued by its Director of Media and Publicity in Ondo, Mr. Steve Otaloro, the party said the claims were false and made only to mislead the public. Otaloro stated, “The APC in Ondo State categorically rejects the recent allegations made by the SDP regarding the diversion of local government funds by the state government. These claims are nothing short of a blatant lie from the pit of hell, aimed at misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension in our polity.”
He noted that all local government funds are shared only after allocations are received from the federal level and that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has not tampered with those funds.
Otaloro added, “Since assuming office, Governor Aiyedatiwa has maintained a commitment to democratic governance at the local government level, ensuring that local councils function effectively even in the absence of elections.”
He also said that the governor has put in place systems that protect transparency and prevent any gap in governance, especially at the local level.
