The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed hope that former Governor James Ibori would eventually join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This statement came during a vigil mass held in memory of the late Professor Amos Utuama, former Deputy Governor of the state. The event took place at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Otu-Jeremi, Ughelli South Local Government Area, on Tuesday evening.
Oborevwori, speaking to the congregation, noted the importance of unity within the Urhobo political community. He emphasized that bringing together various political forces in the state, including Ibori, could be key to fostering harmony and progress in the region.
While delivering his tribute to the late Professor Utuama, Governor Oborevwori highlighted several of the late leader’s contributions to society. He recalled Utuama’s significant role in his community and expressed deep respect for his selflessness. “I am very happy to be here today, seeing this large gathering for one man. The preaching today is not about the dead, it is about the living,” the Governor said.
Oborevwori also recalled some of Utuama’s notable acts of charity, such as the donation of land he received in Asaba during his time as Deputy Governor. “The land allocated to him in Asaba while he was Deputy Governor, he donated it to the Catholic Church and also contributed to building the church. To me, that is a kingdom investment,” he explained.
Prayers were offered during the ceremony, with Governor Oborevwori also praying that Utuama’s passing would lead to peace and unity in Ughelli South and the broader Urhobo nation. He spoke of Utuama as a man who “lived well and died well,” showing admiration for the legacy he left behind.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, delivered an emotional exhortation, describing Utuama as a person who made a lasting impact both within the Church and the broader society. Bishop Ewherido urged the family to uphold the values that the late Deputy Governor stood for, including godliness, humility, and selflessness.
In his address, Bishop Ewherido emphasized the importance of unity among the political leaders in the state, noting that such cooperation is essential for the continued peace and development of Delta State. He also comforted the grieving family, explaining that death for a Christian is merely a transition to eternal glory.
Mr. Ovie Utuama, the son of the deceased, expressed the family’s gratitude for the overwhelming support and prayers they had received during this difficult time. He thanked everyone for their presence and kindness, asking for continued prayers as the family mourns their loss.
