A former youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was brutally murdered by gunmen suspected to be cultists. The victim, Adeleke Adeyinka, a councillorship candidate in Ward 15, Abeokuta South Local Government, was killed in broad daylight on Saturday at the Jide Jones area of Oke-Ilewo, shocking the community.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a tinted, unregistered car, identified as a Toyota Corolla. Without warning, they opened fire on Adeleke, using a pump-action shotgun and a pistol. After shooting him, the attackers reportedly stoned the victim until he died on the spot.
Before his assassination, Adeleke had been active within the transport union in the Panseke area of Abeokuta. He was also a former youth leader of the APC in Abeokuta South Local Government Area and had recently begun his political journey as a candidate for the councillorship position in his ward. Many in the community described him as a dedicated and hardworking individual who was well-loved by those he served.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, said the police received a report about the murder at 12:30 p.m. from a concerned citizen.
She said: “A concerned citizen reported that unknown individuals believed to be cultists arrived in an unregistered Toyota Corolla sport car, armed with a pump action shotgun and a pistol at Jide Jones, Oke Ilewo, Ibara, Abeokuta.
“The assailants opened fire killing 40-year-old Adeyinka Adeleke, who was left dead at the scene before the perpetrators fled.”
Following the incident, the police have visited the crime scene, taken photographs, and restored calm to the area. Investigations are ongoing, with the police promising to track down the suspects involved in the gruesome killing.
