Army Begins Major Anti-Bandit Operation in Kwara, Niger Border Community

The Nigerian Army’s counter-insurgency efforts have intensified in the Kainji Lake National Park region and surrounding border communities of Kwara and Niger states, as troops launch a large-scale operation to flush out armed criminals threatening peace and safety in the area.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Kaiama, Kwara State, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Obinna Onubogu, said soldiers have already entered deep forest areas where bandits are believed to be hiding. The operation is being carried out under direct orders from the Chief of Army Staff and is part of a broader effort to restore law and order in communities affected by banditry and other violent crimes.

General Onubogu noted that the military operation, codenamed Park Strike Four, will cover a long stretch of about 90 kilometers starting from Kemanji through the thick Kainji forest. This area, known for its difficult terrain and lack of access roads, has over time become a safe haven for criminals.

“The troops are not relenting,” the GOC said, noting the commitment of the officers and soldiers deployed in the area. He added that the Army is working closely with local security outfits and other national forces to ensure full coverage and success of the operation.

He also explained that apart from flushing out bandits, the operation will help reassure the public and restore trust in security efforts. “We will continue until these criminals are rooted out completely,” he said.
